Finally an upset

Ghana 2- A Gyan (2), S Muntari (82)
Czech Rep 0

Remember this game. In months to come and even years to come, when people talk about how African teams beat European teams, this Ghana team will be mentioned, deservingly, along side the names of other great African World Cup sides such as Cameroon and Senegal.

To me, Ghana’s win over Czech Republic today was the first upset of the tournament. And they way they did were just excellent. World Cup debutants, they showed us in their first game against Italy that they can play attractive football. Sadly on that day, they petered out softly, losing 2-0.

Today however they started great – got a goal as early as the second minute. Then they just played attacking football. Mind you this was against a Czech Republic side that was full of confidence after their routing of the USA last week.

Ghana even got and missed a penalty but they kept going at the opposite goal and were fully rewarded with the second goal at the 82nd minute.

Their players fought for all the ball – something seen in the number of yellow cards the got, 5, - and at the end were enjoying themselves. Now let’s see if they can beat USA in their final group match and move into the second stage.
