England must win big and with style

Although England won their opening match against Paraguay, their woeful performance was roundly criticised by the British media and their fans alike. Their game that day lacked fluidity, looked negative and had no flair. They did not look like a team that want/can win the World Cup.

And at the back of that game, we hear rumours of split in the England camp between the players and the management. Seniors players are said to be unhappy about the tactical approach used by manager Sven Goran Eriksson, his use of substitutes, the substitution of Michael Owen in the 55th minute of the game and finally over the use of Wayne Rooney – where and when is the question with many believing the striker should be allowed to get fit properly but Sven is said to be thinking of throwing him into the fray even today.

So with all these going on, it is imperative that England perform well against tiny Trinidad and Tobago later today. To put an end to the mounting criticism from the British media, England must win. No, they must win big and win in style. I reckon anything less than four goals will be a failure against this T&T team made up of journeymen footballers from the lower divisions of English football.

England midfield must take control of the game and start feeding Owen and Peter Crouch to have a go at the opposite goal.

And will Rooney play? How about the young kid Theo Walcott? I don’t know what Sven is thinking but if England were leading very comfortably, perhaps Walcott will get a chance to show his stuff in the final 30 minutes of the game. And maybe, just maybe, Rooney will get a short run in too.

T&T had a wonderful game against Sweden in their opening match. The scoreless draw was very much due to the superb form of their keeper Shaka Hislop. Hislop is sure to be pretty much in a similar form today.

However after the energy sapping first game, can T&T raise their game again today? I don’t think so and maybe this is where their fairytale World Cup dream will come to an end.

They will play well, no doubt about that, but England should have a better game. David Beckham and his team must raise their own game to justify their tag as one of the favourites of this tournament.

And more importantly, they will have to silence the critics back home. For this at least I think they will do their best to win big tonight.
