Echoes of 1966?

Here are some facts and figures that seem to suggest why England can emulate their 1966 victory.

  • In 1966, it was Jimmy Greaves who was unfit to play for England. His replacement Geoff Hurst became more than a capable substitute in the finals. This time around replace Greaves with Rooney and Hurst with Peter Crouch,
  • In 1966, Brazil came to the tournament as favourites to defend their title, boasting some of the world’s best players. Just swap Pele with Ronaldinho and you will get what I mean,
  • In 1966, England started their campaign by playing a South American team – Uruguay. This time it is Paraguay, and finally,
  • In 1966, the Bond-spoof Casino Royale was being filmed – same for 2006.

Are these indicators of what is to come?
