Why is Brazil such a hot favourite?

For almost every World Cup series that I can remember, the overwhelming crowd favourite to lift the trophy has always been Brazil. And the same continues this year too where many so-called football neutrals are once again backing the Samba boys to lift the trophy.

So why are they everyone’s favourite? There is no doubt they play beautiful football. They score excellent goals and they make the game look easy. They have won the World Cup for a record five times and their present squad includes truly world class players who can turn the game in a single pass.

So what are their weaknesses then? The Australians, who will play Brazil on June 18, think they have found it. According to the Socceroos assistant coach Graham Arnold the answer lies in exposing the space left behind by forward-going Brazil’s aging full-backs Cafu and Roberto Carlos. And the other secret weapon is to try to cut the supply from the midfield to Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Kaka and Adriano. Surely easier said than done. Lets see how the Australians cope when they actually take the field.

Brazil legend Pele says Ronaldo and Co are skillful players who know how to win hard. He says they are not just good at marauding forward looking for goals but are also strong in defence this time around.

Germany libero Franz Beckenbauer agrees Brazil have the best players and thus the favourites, and “after them, Argentina, Germany, Italy, France, Spain and England. That’s it”.

Brazil’s style of football has taken over the world so much so that people were queuing up to pay to watch them train in a small village in Switzerland.

A British football journalist visited the team in training and expressed surprise that the training sessions were so laid-back.

He added: “It begun with the discouraging sight of Ronaldo’s paunch as he trotted on to the pitch but ended with Juninho Pernambucano bending breathtaking free kicks over the practice wall and into the net. Juninho is only a substitute, and Ronaldo’s record is such you hesitate to doubt him.”

And both Ronaldo and Juninho scored in their 4-0 friendly win against New Zealand today. The other scorers were Kaka and Adriano.

So would you bet against them in winning the World Cup... again?
