Viva Espana

Spain 3 - G Raul (72), F Torres (76), F Torres (90) (pen)
Tunisia 1 - J Mnari (8)

Surely now Spain must be one of the favourites to win the World Cup. They have performed well in their opening games and barring any freak incidents, they should win the final group match against Saudi Arabia too.

They showed us that they can score goals – seven in two games, and kept on going even when they were down, as they did today against Tunisia. Today’s game also revealed the strength in depth of this team. They can bring in Cesc Fabres and Raul at half time and suddenly their game plan is changed. They persisted in attacking and were justly rewarded with three goals.

Torres now leads the scorers’ chart with three goals in two games. Their prize now is a second round group match with the runners-up from Group G. This, depending on the final outcome of the last group matches, could mean either South Korea or Switzerland.

Still doubtful that this Spanish team will go far?

Another four-goal thriller for Ukraine

Ukraine 4 – A Rusol (4), S Rebrov (36), A Shevchenko (46), M Kalinichenko (84)
Saudi Arabia 0

But this time they were not at the receiving end. Instead Ukraine forgot all about their own four goal defeat to thrash the out-of-sorts Saudi Arabia.

Ukraine now looks certain to qualify to the second round as long as they defeat Tunisia. As for Saudi Arabia, their only chance of further progress is by beating Spain. I don’t see that happening. The most likely outcome from them is to start preparing for their flight home.

Togo Swiss rolled

Switzerland 2 - A Frei (17), T Barnetta (88)
Togo 0

Togo came to this tournament full of internal conflicts. However we must credit them for not allowing that to interfere with their game. In their opening match, they gave a good account of themselves against South Korea before losing after having to play with 10 men.

Today, again, they showed us that they can play good attacking football. However just as they were good in attacking, they were bad at defending.

Defensive errors and frailties allowed Switzerland to score two goals to kick Togo out from the tournament.

In the end, it was a deserved win for Switzerland. They now top Group G and need a draw from their last game against South Korea to advance to the knock-out stages.

As for the Africans, they will claim that they were denied a decent penalty claim.
