Robben magic does it for the Dutch

Holland 1 – Arjen Robben (17)
Serbia & Montenegro 0

The third day of the World Cup started today with the skillful Dutch side taking the vastly improved Serbia & Montenegro. In the first half, Holland’s performance were very much reminiscent of their great footballing sides of the 70s and 80s.

Time and time again their players ghosted past Serbia & Montenegro players and Chelsea’s Arjen Robben was outstanding in the right wing. He created so many chances with his mazy runs. His goal came out of a flick on by Robin van Persie which left Robben on a straight run towards the goal.

Two inspired substitution by Serbia changed the game and for the much of the second half, it was Serbia who were dictating the game.

In the end it was a hard-fought win for Holland and they were truly good value for money. This group, which also contains Argentina and Ivory Coast, promises some good football in weeks to come.

Meanwhile...

In the other two games today, Mexico scored twice in the final 20 minutes to defeat Iran 3-1 in their opening World Cup Group D match in Nuremberg while Portugal defeated Angola by a single goal. in the other Group D match.
