After the blistering start yesterday, dare we hope for more of the same in the three games to be played today?
Our World Cup bonanza for today starts with the highly charged England taking on Paraguay, After this, it is Sweden vs Trinidad and Tobago and the day is rounded off with Argentina playing Ivory Coast.
England vs Paraguay
The worry over Steven Gerrard’s fitness following a hip injury is now over and he is set to make it to the field. In any event, England can afford to miss him at this stage of the tournament as they have either Michael Carrick or Jamie Carragher to stand in.
England is expected to start with a traditional 4-4-2 formation with Michael Owen and Peter Crouch playing upfront. Wayne Rooney definitely will not play in this game.
Paraguay is also in their own striking crisis with striker Jose Cardozo ruled out of the tournament due to an injury. Fellow forward Roque Santa Cruz too could be out due to knee injury. Replacement striker Dante Lopez will start tomorrow.
Sweden vs Trinidad and Tobago
The Swedes are without experienced goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson who was injured in training. He was knocked unconscious when a fierce shot from Kim Kallstrom struck him at point-blank range. He might even miss the second game against Paraguay on June 15. Sweden’s problem is compounded by the fact that their two other keepers are totally inexperienced.
Trinidad and Tobago also suffered a major blow of their own when veteran defender Marvin Andrews was ruled out of the game with a knee injury. No date is fixed for his return.
Argentina vs Ivory Coast
This game sees Chelsea club mates Didier Drogba and Hernan Crespo playing against each other.
Argentina coach Jose Pekerman will be without Lionel Messi for their opening game but he is confident his team has the resources to overcome the Africans. Argentina will make use of their fast players with great ball skills and bags of pace to undo the Africans. Javier Saviola may partner Crespo up front.
The Ivorian side will be pleased that Argentina do not have a good record against African sides in their opening game in a World Cup and they believe that appalling record should continue.
